Sweeney Todd Musical in Manila

At last, my arm is complete again! — Sweeney Todd

I was desperate to brush up on my art appreciation, and fortunately I found Atlantis Theatrical’s posts just in time to purchase tickets for Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Musical Thriller, starring Lea Salonga and Jett Pangan. The show was for a limited period only: from October 11-27, 2019.

Mentioning Lea Salonga to my girlfriends was enough to convince them to go on a Friday night – when Metro Manila traffic is at its worst. After work last Friday we left Bonifacio Global City via Grab and inched our way through 11 kilometers of heavy traffic. I planned to grab a fancy dinner before heading off, but we had to allow for 2.5 hours’ travel time. That meant a drive-through dinner at McDonalds.

It was my first time at Solaire Theatre and I was not disappointed. The seats were comfortable and the view of the stage was good from where we were. When the curtains rose, I was althemore impressed with the set. The music was good, and the cast were great. Lea Salonga, who played the innovative, determined and witty Mrs Lovett was able to pull off a natural sounding British accent and I loved how her singing voice was so vibrant. Jett Pangan as Sweeney Todd was ok – first time I’ve listened to him sing and he was good. In my opinion Lea and some casts overshadowed him. Like Nyoy Volante who played Pirelli who was so fun to watch!

I am glad we got our tickets early, secured good seats and made it through the Friday night rush hour. It was a fantastic production. One of the few that stood out best for me of all the musicals and plays I have seen to date.
