Countries in My Bucketlist

What countries do you want to visit?

This prompt quickly caught my attention and so I’m joining in on the fun. If I have loads of travel money and have plenty of vacation leaves, I would have booked plane tickets and visited these places long ago. For now they remain in my bucket list:

First on my list is New Zealand. We had plans to go to Queenstown in 2017, booked flights and all. It was Lord of the Rings that opened my eyes to New Zealand, then the raves I heard from friends in the bank I used to work in. My former boss lives in Queenstown and I’ve always been amazed when he shows photos of his picturesque ‘backyard’. Unfortunately a life changing event halted our 2017 plans, and I have not yet had the courage to book to NZ again. Maybe in a couple of years…

Slovenia is another country on top of my list. I’ve always been keen on visiting three scenic places in Slovenia: Lake Bled, Kranj, and Skofja Loka. I have them pinned as Travel Plans in Google Maps, and we almost went early this year for spring vacation. D, however, put up a strong case to go back to Japan this year though as he haven’t been back for so long.

A country closer to home that I’ve been wishing to go to is Sri Lanka. I want to go there to see the wildlife in Udawalawe and the Yala National Park, and see (or hike up) the UNESCO listed site Sigiriya Rock.

These last two countries on top of my bucket list are most likely gonna stay there longer. Main reason is the distance from my country, which means I lose around four days for roundtrip travel alone.

The first one is Peru. I wish I could do that he Inca Trail trek leading to the UNESCO world heritage site Machu Picchu. It would also be awesome seeing the Lumantay Lake with my own eyes.

Lastly is Tanzania. I would love to do a safari at Tarangire Park. And because I know I cannot do a full on trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, a quick day hike will be the highlight of my trip.

How about you? What countries do you want to visit?

Trouble is, there are so many places we want to see that it’s difficult to make a prioritised list! It’s just marginally easier to do it by area….South America is huge now, more of Africa, parts of Europe which we haven’t seen…..and a return to India…

That’s our default, maximizing the opportunity to cover what we can by area. Time is not just enough each time.
In 2020 I joined AirBnB virtual experiences and I quite enjoyed my ‘trip’ to Jaipur. I would love to see it with my own eyes.

great list you will love any and all of the countries you’ve listed! Sri Lanka I think is my favourite from your list, I haven’t been to Tanzania though so can’t comment on it BUT I do dearly want to get to Zanzibar. One country I have booked to go to TWICE before and had cancelled plans (the most recent time was 2020) was the Philippines! With some luck I will get there this year! but I’m holding my breath….

I hope you can visit the PH soon, Andy. I looked up Zanzibar just now and it indeed has lots of raves. I really wish I can go to the countries I’ve listed in the near future.

New Zealand is on my bucket list too; I want to be in the place that witness the sunrise first in the whole world everyday, that is in East Cape New Zealand. I also want to visit Machu Picchu ‘someday’.

That’s a fantastic idea, seeing the world’s first sunrise each day. I read that that East Cape Lighthouse offers a great view. Hopefully we see these places someday.

I’ve been to Peru and Slovenia, and I can vouch they are incredible countries worth visiting! I especially want to return to Slovenia to visit Lake Bled, given how scenic it is…next on my bucket list of countries to visit include Singapore, Malaysia, and the Faroe Islands (technically not a country, but a Danish territory). Hope to make it over to these places within the next year or two! Happy travels 😊

I too would love to visit New Zealand. But I don’t really think too much about it. We go on a trip once a year. Our daughter lives in Germany. We are thinking of going there next year in June. She and our grandchildren are coming end of July this year. Regards.

I greedily read your post. I have only been to Sri Lanka on your list and that was decades ago; and a lovely visit. The people are very hospitable and I didn’t go all the way down to Yala but my parents have gone a few times and love it!

I heard about the hospitality of the people in Sri Lanka, and that’s what makes me more eager to visit. If we get to go, I’ll select a flight that connects thru Singapore as we miss it too.

If you can, experience the inca trail to Machu Pichu. It is an amazing trek. The Camino de Santiago is #1 on my bucket list. The challenge is it takes about 4 weeks to complete (not to mention 500 a mile pilgrimage). But I love having this on my bucket list to think about and aim for. I will do it. Just have to figure out how

I wish you the best in your goal to complete the Camino de Santiago. I heard good things about it and my sister in law did it last year. If I get the chance, I think I will too.

Hope you can go! If you haven’t seen it, check out the movie “The Way”. It’s what inspired me about the Camino.

Interesting list. These countries are also among those I would want to visit in the future. The Andean trails and Machu Picchu in Peru are definitely priorities. And yeah, New Zealand! That Middle Earthish feel. Exploring it would be beyond surreal. Other countries on my own list: the Scandinavian countries plus Iceland, Morocco, Iran, Turkey, Sri Lanka (as well), Namibia. The list is exhaustive. Let’s just say I want to visit all the countries in the world 🙂 Anyway, safe and happy travels!
