Cappadocia, Turkiye: Day 1

Last week D and I went to Turkiye and I finally got to tick off a place in my bucketlist – Cappadocia. We maximized the opportunity to go there from Istanbul, hopped on a Turkish Airlines for a flight a little over an hour.

Our hotel, the Helike Cave Hotel in Uchisar, was located about 40 minutes’ by car from the Nevsehir Airport. We availed of the hotel’s airport transfers, and as soon as the van drove uphill towards our hotel, the view of valley below greeted us with a sight to behold.

We were in Cappadocia for only 3 days – with technically only 1 full day for tours as we fly out in the moring of the 3rd day. So as soon as we settled in our hotel, D and I explored the neighborhood by foot and admired the sights from the Tiraz Castle and the Kekliğin Castle which were just a few meters away from our hotel.

For lunch, D and I headed to Felis Restaurant and Pub. Their staff were warm and accommodating, and the food we ordered were quite delicious. One thing I liked about our Turkiye trip was the food, and I’ve made a video all about it. Their bread was soft and fresh, and the dips that go with them were all fantastic.

After lunch, D and I checked out the souvenir shops and looked for a cafe with a view of the Pigeon Valley. I was looking for some baklava but unfortunately we were unable to find one at the time. What we found to go with our Turkish coffee was ice cream. Thats when I dicovered that I love Turskish ice cream. It was a start of many more ice cream snacks throughout that week.

It was almost sunset when D and I went back to our hotel. But it was a quick rest as we wanted to see how the sunset looks like in Uchisar. We found a spot next to the Uchisar Castle and stayed there to enjoy the view until dusk.

Afterwards, we had dinner at Şıra Restaurant. It had a romantic ambience, and the staff were also very attentive. D had lambchops and I had chicken with yogurt. The serving sizes were generous, and we felt we needed to do a bit more walking after. By the way, we met a cute and funny ginger cat in this restaurant.

Post dinner, D and I climbed back up onto Uchisar Castle. The visitors were lesser then and we could feel the cool night breeze. I stopped by another souvenir shop to get a postcard. And lo and behold – an ice cream vendor was nearby so we took it as a sign for dessert.

As we got back to the hotel we set our alarms to 5AM. We charged our Go Pro and our phones so we would be ready to catch the balloons early morning the next day. Our hotel boasted of vantage point views of the Cappadocia balloons, and I just couldn’t wait for tomorrow.

Ah, so happy you visited Cappadocia! I was there four years ago and visited the area, as well as took the early-morning hot air balloon ride. The food was absolutely fresh and incredible, and I still dream about Turkish food to this day! Can’t wait to read about your hot air balloon ride!

This looks like a fantasy landscape with the rock formations. I had heard of them, but didn’t know much else about Cappadocia. The food sounds wonderful.

I have heard that Turkey is stunning and the food absolutely delicious … and now seeing a slice of it here has confirmed it. That is the most unusual castle I have ever seen!

Food was definitely a highlight. I realized I’ve been missing out. It was a long flight from where I am but was so worth it.
