I’m taking a small detour from my US trip series because I am excited to chime in on today’s Daily Prompt topic. This question brought a smile to my face as good memories of high school and university days flooded in. Initial top of mind was the classes I had the most fun going to because of factors that automatically made me favor them more – like those where I had most of my friends (or a crush or two) in, or those that didn’t have difficult homework and exams. So after filtering those out, I realized it was a subject I took during my sophomore year in high school.
And that, my friends, was World History. I remember to this day the names of the different dynasties of China that my teacher had us memorize on Day 1. And from that day on I always looked forward to what I would learn from her every day. Through World History my mind was opened to the ancient civilizations, empires, conflicts or wars, heroes, and evolution of societies.
Back then my dad hung a giant world map at a wall in our house, and learning about the historical events of the countries I used to just see on the map made me feel more interested in them. This would later be reinforced in our travels, where seeing historical landmarks, monuments, or museums would incite different emotions like respect, reverence, or just the feeling of witnessing a connection to the past.
