Last Friday night I went to the BGC Arts Center in Taguig City to check out the Monet & Friends Alive multi-sensory exhibit. It was my first time to ever go to this kind of experience, so I was quite curious and excited. My girlfriend and I met at the venue at 6:30PM. It’s a good thing visit to the exhibit had limited slots per period so guests can fully enjoy the space and quiet.

As soon as we entered, we could already smell the fragrant scent of the flowers. It came from the section where Monet’s garden at Giverny was replicated. We started at that area, our sense of smell perhaps calling to us the most. The area was quite instagrammable – adorned with colorful flowers, a bridge like that of Monet’s, and moving display of waterlilies on the pond. The soft sound of music and birds chirping added to the delightful feeling that exhibit imbibes.

On our way to the digital art section, we read through the history and background of the Impressionist artists whose work were displayed in the exhibit such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas.

Finally we reached the main room where I was amazed with the dynamic display of the artists’ famous works. I was mesmerized by what I saw and the classical music score that was played while I contemplated on the quotes from the Artists that were also shown. Of the quotes, this one gravitated to me the most:

“My eyes were finally opened and I understood nature. I learned at the same time to love it.”

Claude Monet

My friend and I sat on one of the benches and spent a bit of time taking in all the colors and music. Time flew by and I am happy I had this chance to shift my mind away from the daily routines and just be in the moment. I hope we have more of these types of exhibits happening again in Metro Manila someday soon.

I’ve been to a couple of these shows, in Toronto at the height of the pandemic, and in Bordeaux too, but not in Paris. We’re lucky to have the real thing here, and even today I was at the Musée d’Orsay. But remembering the show in Toronto, on Van Gogh, I acknowledge that it’s a way of getting closer to the work, and of noticying some of the work details highlighted in the script.

These artists’ pieces are the first I look for when I go to museums abroad. We have a few in our National Museum, but how wonderful it must be to have more of their work easily accessible.
