After a short but lovely overnight stay in Somma Lombardo, we hopped on a train bound for Milan. The journey took less than an hour but felt like traveling through time. When we stepped into Milano Centrale, it all came rushing back. It had been 13 years since we last set foot in this grand train station, and walking through its halls again felt surreal.

Our hotel was just a few blocks away, and as we walked pulling our luggage along cobbled side street we let the sounds of the city slowly sink in. After checking in, we didn’t waste any time. It was time for late lunch after all, and I had a seafood risotto at Ristorante Pizzeria San Mina – Milano. It was incredibly delicious, each spoonful a reminder of why Italian cuisine is always a good idea.
After lunch, with Google Maps in hand, we began our walk to Duomo di Milano, one of the city’s crown jewels. On the way, we made a spontaneous detour through Giardini Indro Montanelli, a green oasis in the city. There, I admired a monumental tree that’s been standing for over 200 years.
Eventually, we arrived at the Duomo. As expected, it was swarming with tourists like us. Despite the crowds, its majesty never fades. Right next to it, the Piazza del Duomo still takes my breath away. These are some of those places that one never really forgets, no matter how many years pass.

To cap off our afternoon, D and I treated ourselves to gelato while watching the ebb and flow of people on the Duomo’s lively grounds. It was a moment of stillness in a day full of movement (more than 20,000 steps, to be exact).
We went back to our hotel with tired feet but recharged spirits, grateful for the chance to revisit the city with a more relaxed pace as compared to 2012 when it felt like we were in an Amazing Race.
Stay tuned for my next post: where we trade the cityscape for scenic lakeside views as we head to Lago di Como, Bellagio, and Lugano.
