Como, Bellagio and Lugano Bliss

Originally, our plan was to spend two nights in the picturesque town of Bellagio and do a DIY trip around the lake area. But as our travel date to Italy approached, news of potential train strikes started to worry us. So, in a last-minute decision, we cancelled our Bellagio booking and extended our stay in Milan instead. To make the most of our time without dealing with travel logistics, we booked a day tour via Agoda covering Lake Como, Bellagio, and Lugano. So on the early morning of Day 3, D and I made our way to Milano Centrale, where we met our guide for the day, Daniele. He introduced us to our driver for the day, Luca. By 8:45 AM, we were on the road, headed for our first stop.

Como

Daniele guided us through the quiet streets of Como to Piazza Volta, where the Statue of Alessandro Volta stands tall. Volta, one of Italy’s greatest scientists, is best known for inventing the electric battery and for whom the unit of electricity is named. The piazza was surrounded by cafes and shops just waking up for the day.

We were given an hour to explore on our own, so D and I made our way to the lakeshore and admired the beauty of the scene in front of us. We walked along the streets of the old town, and eventually made our way to the Piazza del Duomo which was starting to buzz with locals and early tourists. The grand facade of the Cathedral of Como caught our eye, and as we explored further what I personally enjoyed was browsing silk scarves from the local shops. We capped off our short stay with a cappuccino in one of the cafΓ©s before heading back to regroup with Daniele.

Back on the bus, we were treated to a scenic drive along the lake. Luca made a brief stop in Argegno, in front of Ponte di Pioraco, a Roman bridge believed to date back to Emperor Augustus’ time.

Bellagio

Soon after, we boarded a boat that took us across Lake Como to Bellagio, famously called the β€œPearl of the Lake.” As we arrived, Daniele gave us free time again, and D and I eagerly set off to explore the romantic town. Its cobblestone paths, steep staircases, and quaint alleyways made every turn feel like a discovery.

We had lunch at Ristorante Bilacus. I had caserecce with fish sauce followed by a flavorful fish steak, while D enjoyed a refined combo of beef tartare and cacciatore-style chicken. After lunch, we hiked up to the Basilica di San Giacomo, a Romanesque wonder in the heart of Bellagio.

Before leaving, we savored a quick affogato by the lakeβ€”because dessert with a view is always a good idea.

Lake Como Boat Cruise

Reunited with our group, we boarded a private boat for a 45-minute cruise on Lake Como. Daniele pointed out several famous villas, but the highlight for me was Villa del Balbianello, famously featured in Star Wars: Episode II and James Bond: Casino Royale. Seeing these cinematic backdrops in real life, surrounded by the beauty of the lake, was something truly special.

Lugano, Switzerland

Our last destination for the day was Lugano, just across the border in Switzerland. After a smooth bus ride, we arrived in this elegant lakeside town known for its blend of Swiss and Italian cultures. Instead of racing through shops or tourist spots, D and I took a slow stroll by the lakefront. The calm water, ducks gliding peacefully, and the alpine air made it the perfect final pause for the day.

As Luca drove us back to Milan in the early evening, I looked out the window feeling grateful for how the day unfolded. What began as a logistical workaround turned into one of the most memorable highlights of our Italy trip. The ease of having the details handled by a professional tour company allowed us to relax, enjoy, and soak in the beauty of three incredible destinationsβ€”all in one day.

It’s amazing how good things can come out of what seems to be a problem. I love that area – Lake Como, Bellagio and Lugano – and have visited several times before. I think you made an excellent choice and especially not to rush around to the tourist sites. Cheers.

The area is indeed lovely. I wish I have more vacation days for a longer stay in each ot them, but for now I am contented with having had a short but sweet visit.

The Lake Como region of Italy has got to be one of the most-beautiful in the country. I only took a day trip over several years ago and I found the towns of Como, Bellagio, and Varenna to be especially lovely. It was a bit of a hassle timing ferries to-and-from each town, but it worked out in the end. I’m with you that trains (let alone train strikes) are unreliable in Italy, as I also had issues with getting back to Milan afterwards, i.e. the train was incredibly-slow, and it only stopped outside of Milan, which required public transport to get into the city center. All the same, you certainly had a wonderful time, as documented in your photos. I’m glad you had a great vacation in this part of the world!
