Slovenia Day 1: Ljubljana

After a lovely overnight stay in the romantic city of Verona, it was time to move on to one of the main highlights of our recent European adventure. The next morning, D and I boarded the 9:55 AM Flixbus from Verona Porta Nuova and began our journey to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.

The drive itself was scenic, passing through postcard-worthy landscapes.

As we entered Slovenia, I noticed the green surroundings became more lush, and had a sneak peak at snow-capped mountains in a distance. We arrived in Ljubljana at around 3:30 PM.

Our home base for the next few nights was a cozy spot about a 15-minute walk from the bus station. With our luggage in tow and tummies grumbling, we decided to stop by Das ist Valter, a highly rated restaurant we found through Google Maps. We enjoyed our lunch, and I did not resist trying their home-brewed beer which was refreshingly good.

Recharged and ready, we continued to our accommodation, Boutique Apartments, where we were warmly welcomed by our host, Margit. Since I had only pre-planned a trip to Bled, I was glad to receive destination tips from Margit.

After settling in and freshening up, D and I wasted no time and headed straight out to explore the Ljubljana Old Town.

We wandered through its cobbled streets, and admired the bridges and architecture. A few minutes later the sound of church bells echoed through the streets, making me feel like we’re in a fairy tale. It was easy to fall in love with the city’s character.

One of the highlights that afternoon was checking out the Ljubljana Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the city. We reached it via the funicular, which was a short but fun ride. Once at the top, we took our time exploring the castle grounds. My personal favorites were the terrace and the watchtower, both offering breathtaking panoramic views of Ljubljana and the surrounding mountains.

This was just the beginning of our Slovenian journey. Stay tuned for our next day’s adventure to the magical Lake Bled and beyond.

I’ve only had a couple of hours in Ljubljana, while en-route from Zagreb to Venice (also on Flixbus). I only saw the main highlights, but as it’s such a small capital, it was pretty easy to see the majority of sites in such a short amount of time! I didn’t get to go into or up the castle, but the views from the top look great! Glad you enjoyed Slovenia: I look forward to reading about Lake Bled (a place I’ve yet to visit)!

Glad you got to visit the city for a couple of hours. Ljubljana is definitely easy to explore, and it is a very green city. Zagreb was originally in my itinerary (as I wanted to visit Plitvice National Park which was close). Alas, vacation leaves are limited.

Ljubljana is so charming! My husband is originally from nearby Croatia so we’ve spent some time in Slovenia over the years. I love to tell my little American nieces and nephews about the dragons… they find that interesting!

You’re blessed to have spent time in Slovenia over the years! The dragons are indeed interesting, I find their stories (hearing stories about them from our guide) fascinating.
