On an early morning, D and I said goodbye to the charming city of Brescia, Italy. We boarded our morning train bound for Milano Centrale for our first transfer of the day. At Milano, our SBB train was already waiting, and the sight of it instantly brought back memories of a trip I took back in 2012, traveling from Milano to Zurich. Some things change, but the thrill of boarding a Swiss train always feels the same.

At exactly 10:10 a.m., we pulled out of Milano Centrale, bound for Lucerne. The ride was, as expected, scenic. I knew from experience that Switzerland never fails to deliver. After settling into our seats, D and I wandered to the train’s cafe a few carriages ahead of us. It turned out to be a delightful choice, as the cafe had wider windows. As we snacked on our pastries and coffee, we sat back and took in the meadows and clear rivers we passed by.
We rolled into Lucerne at 1:41 p.m. Much as I wanted to have a quick dash outside for a photo in front of the station, the weather had other plans. A heavy rain welcomed us in Lucerne and kept us indoors. So we spent our layover at the station’s supermarket where I bought our sandwiches for lunch. Soon, it was time to board our 2:06 p.m. train for the last leg of the journey, on to our final destination for the day: Interlaken.
I did not know it then, but the next couple of hours would leave a permanent mark in my heart. As the train glided past Lake Lungern, I was simply overwhelmed by the beauty before me. The turquoise water seemed almost unreal. For the first time in my life, I cried tears of awe. Now Lungern is marked as a place To Go to in my Google Maps. I promised myself one day we will go back for a proper visit.
Just as I thought we already saw the highlight of that train ride, Brienz greeted us with another beautiful view. Its serene lake looked like it came out of a postcard.
When we finally arrived in Interlaken, we walked to Arnold’s Bed and Breakfast, our home for the next few days. I had stumbled upon this place through Google Maps months before and had reached out to the host via email. Even though they were away during our stay, they left a thoughtful touch of welcome that made us feel right at home. Our room had a window that gave a lovely view of the mountains.

This trip was more than just another stop on our itinerary. It was the culmination of years of dreaming and planning. During the pandemic, I watched a Korean TV show that filmed some of its most beautiful scenes in Switzerland. Since then, I had been making plans to see these places. The long commute from Brescia to Interlaken, almost an entire day’s journey, had been worth every second.
